If a child is seriously injured at preschool we will first phone an ambulance and then the child's parent. A staff member will accompany the child and remain with them until such time as the parent arrives.
If a child is not seriously injured, but requires medical attention, we will phone the child's parent, then the emergency contact if the parents are unable to be contacted. If contact cannot be made a staff member will take the child to the medical practitioner nominated on the enrolment form.
Details of accidents and first aid treatments are recorded on an accident report and given to the parents.
We have regular fire evacuation drills. At this time the staff and children practise evacuating the Centre building safely and quickly.
In the event of a fire, staff direct the children to move in a quick and orderly way, travelling on a low level to the most appropriate exit. A staff member takes the class roll and emergency contact numbers and once outside in a safe area, the children are settled and comforted and the roll called to ensure all the children are accounted for.
If practical a staff member will phone the fire brigade before vacating the building. If not the phone call would be made from the Centre's mobile phone after vacating.
If the fire is small enough to be contained, a staff member will engage the fire extinguisher while the other staff evacuate the children. Once deemed safe, the children will then return to the centre. However, if it is deemed unsafe through damage, smoke etc. parents will be contacted and asked to collect their children.
If warning is given of severe storm, children will be kept indoors and away from windows. Windows will be taped (criss-cross fashion "X") and electrical appliances disconnected. If necessary, mattresses will be used as protection. If emergency assistance is required the local State Emergency Services will be contacted.
